Monster traffic jam: Swiss people stuck for 12 hours in Croatia

“We have been stuck in traffic since 6:30 p.m. Saturday evening and we are moving less than a kilometer per hour,” a reader testified to “20 Minuten” this Sunday. At 8 a.m., he and his partner were still stuck in front of the Bajakovo border post, in Croatia, which regulates the passage to Serbia. Same story from another witness: “We arrived at 1 p.m. on Saturday and we still have not crossed the border.”

What is happening? “No one knows why this is dragging on so long. And there is no organization,” he reports, annoyed. “We also had a small accident. But no chance of contacting the police in this chaos. An ambulance wouldn’t even be able to get through,” says the witness, who lives in the canton of Bern.

The problem is that the unfortunate motorists have nothing to eat or drink. And they can't get supplies anywhere since they're stuck on the highway. “I’m not even talking about going to the toilet, it’s horrible,” continues one of the Swiss. They killed time by stretching their legs outside and watching videos on YouTube, even if the connection was poor.

The media “Dnevnik” reported during the night from Saturday to Sunday a traffic jam of around twenty kilometers at the border. “Everything is at a standstill, people have no water,” one reader reported. “They get out of the car, defecate on the side of the road. Some run out of gas,” according to another witness.

According to the media, there is no particular reason for this traffic jam, other than vacation departures which also cause disruptions on other highways, roads and customs in the country. “Customs officers are taking their time because the influx of tourists bothers them,” says one of the Swiss. “We come here often, but we’ve never seen this before.”

At the time of publishing these lines, Sunday afternoon, we did not know if these readers had finally managed to cross the border. We wish them good luck on their journey.
