The police had indicated that the attacker was “put under control” of the police. He is a 19-year-old man, according to several Croatian media. “We are shocked, like the entire Croatian population, by the tragedy that occurred in this primary school,” declared Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who spoke of “horror”. The mayor of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomasevic, the Minister of the Interior, Davor Bozinovic, and the Minister of Education, Radovan Fuchs, visited the site.
Media reports published photos of helicopters landing near the school to transport injured people.
Injured in Zagreb school knife attack out of danger
The teacher and children injured on Friday by a knife-wielding assailant at a primary school in Zagreb are out of danger, Health Minister Irena Hrstic said. The student killed was 7 years old. Five people were injured in total, “including a child who, unfortunately, died on the spot after an attempt at resuscitation”, the minister declared to journalists, expressing her “indignation” at this attack. All the other injured (three students and a teacher) were hospitalized and their lives are not in danger, she added.
The official Croatian news agency, Hina, initially reported a toll of eight injured, including a child who died, citing the Ministry of Health.
This attack is unprecedented in Croatia. Last year, neighboring Serbia was rocked by two shootings in less than 48 hours, including a massacre at a school in Belgrade in which a 13-year-old student killed nine of his classmates and a school guard.
