Joe Biden will travel to Italy in January where he will meet separately with the head of government Giorgia Meloni and Pope Francis, the White House announced Thursday, probably the last foreign trip of the American president before the transfer of power with Donald Trump.
During this trip, scheduled for January 9 to 12, the democratic president, a practicing Catholic, “will meet with the Pope to discuss efforts to advance peace in the world,” announced in a press release, the White House spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre.
Joe Biden spoke by telephone Thursday with the sovereign pontiff and thanked him for his “continued commitment to alleviate the suffering of the world,” according to the American presidency.
“The strength of the relationship between the United States and Italy”
This trip comes a few days before Republican Donald Trump’s return to power on January 20, which could mark a change of course in American diplomacy.
The Democrat “will also meet with Italian leaders to highlight the strength of the relationship between the United States and Italy, thank Prime Minister Meloni for her strong leadership during the G7” in the country in June, the press release continued. Joe Biden will also see his Italian counterpart Sergio Mattarella.
