President Emmanuel Macron visited Mayotte on Thursday to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Chido, the most violent to hit the island in almost a century. This disaster left hundreds of families homeless and caused at least 31 deaths, according to French authorities.
During his visit, Emmanuel Macron flew over the most affected areas before going to Mamoudzou hospital, where he met caregivers and residents in distress. He promised increased aid, announcing the arrival of four tons of food and medicine as well as the sending of 180 tons of equipment by the French navy.
“We will continue to act together, more caregivers came with me today, others will arrive. The (field) hospital will be set up tomorrow,” he said.
Winds exceeding 220 km/h destroyed entire neighborhoods, particularly in the precarious areas of Mamoudzou. Many families now live in extreme conditions, without water or electricity.
Nassirou Hamidouni, a resident, testifies: “We are still in shock, but God left us alive. We couldn’t find a place to sleep with our children. »
Mayotte, a French territory marked by great precariousness, is facing a reconstruction which promises to be long and complex. The victims, particularly affected by the inequalities already existing on the island, are counting on massive aid to overcome this unprecedented crisis.
