Verdict. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was definitively sentenced to one year in prison, which he will serve under electronic surveillance, in the context of the so-called “wiretapping” affair.
This decision follows the rejection, on December 18, 2024, by the Court of Cassation, of his appeal against his conviction for “corruption” and “influence peddling”.
The charges against Mr. Sarkozy date back to 2014, when he was accused of trying to illegally obtain information from a magistrate on a procedure concerning him, in exchange for a promise to intervene for a position prestigious.
Although sentenced to a prison sentence, Mr. Sarkozy will be able to carry it out at home, equipped with an electronic bracelet, thus avoiding incarceration in a penitentiary establishment.
The Court of Cassation on Wednesday rejected the appeal of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy in the “wiretapping” case, definitively rendering his sentence to one year in prison under an electronic bracelet. The former head of state was prosecuted for corruption and influence peddling.
It should be noted that the 69-year-old former head of state was declared definitively guilty, without recourse to appeal, on the so-called “wiretapping” case, an unprecedented case in France. The former president will have to wait for the terms of his electronic bracelet.
