In the state of Virginia in the United States, a hunter was crushed to death by the corpse of a bear. The animal, which had found refuge in a tree, had just been shot dead by another hunter. However, this practice is prohibited.
A hunting accident occurred this Friday, December 13 in Lunenburg County, Virginia, United States. As reported by French media Le Parisien, a 58-year-old hunter died after a bear fell on him. But how could such a situation arise?
The bear was scared
A group of hunters were tracking the bear on the morning of Monday, December 9. Frightened, the animal took refuge at the top of a tree. As the group walked away, one of the hunters shot the bear. The body of the animal then fell from a height of three meters on the victim, who died a few days later. “A member of the hunting party provided first aid until local fire and emergency medical services arrived” Wildlife Resources spokeswoman Shelby Crouch said Tuesday.
It’s illegal
However, shooting a bear sheltering in a tree is illegal. The government of Virginia also recalls on its site: “It is illegal to maim, injure or dislodge a bear from a tree for the purpose of continuing a hunt.”
The man leaves behind five children and eight grandchildren. One of his sons posted on the social network Facebook: “Dad was doing what he loved most, bear hunting with me and some of his friends, when he was injured“.
