this country wants to strengthen its fish production capacity – La Nouvelle Tribune

Algeria intends to boost its aquaculture sector by focusing on the revival of fish feed production from 2025. During a recent meeting bringing together local and the National Livestock Feed Office (ONAB)the Ministry of Agriculture reaffirmed this commitment to support the local fish supply.

Currently, aquaculture represents less than 5% of national fisheries production, estimated at 125,500 tonnes in 2023. To achieve its objectives, the government aims to increase the contribution of fish farming to 50 % of national production and bring the latter to 200,000 tonnes by 2030an increase of approximately 60 %.

Several recent initiatives show a clear desire to achieve these ambitions. Last May, Continental Aqua invested nearly 8 millions USD in a fish feed production unit, with technological support from the American E.S.E Intec. At the same time, a cooperation with South Koreaannounced last October, provides for the installation of a food factory with a capacity of 10 tons per day has Ouarglain partnership with the KOICA.

Although the overall strategic plan has not yet been revealed, these actions are part of a roadmap currently being developed to modernize the fishing and aquaculture industry. The central objective remains to strengthen food self-sufficiency while diversifying the Algerian economy.

By stimulating the production of fish feed, Algeria wishes to provide new impetus to its aquaculture sector, thus guaranteeing augmentation durable of the local fish supply in the coming years.
