(Luxembourg) Former senior US Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi was injured and had to be hospitalized during a trip to Luxembourg to commemorate a World War II battle, her office announced on Friday.

The former Speaker of the House of Representatives, aged 84, was in the Grand Duchy with a parliamentary delegation to mark the 80e anniversary of the crucial Battle of the Bulge, its spokesperson Ian Krager said in a statement.
Ms. Pelosi “sustained an injury during an official event and was hospitalized for tests,” he said.
According to several American media, the octogenarian fell down marble stairs and fractured her hip.
She is “receiving excellent treatment at the moment,” Mr. Krager said, adding that she continues to work and regrets “not being able to attend other events” of the delegation.
The first woman to become Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi lost this position last year when the Republicans regained the majority in this chamber.
Ms. Pelosi, however, retains great influence over the Democratic Party and her behind-the-scenes maneuvers at the end of July were partly responsible for Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
Nancy Pelosi had already visited in 2019 to attend the 75e anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the last major German offensive on the Western Front during World War II.
The battle raged for six weeks in the Ardennes region between Belgium and Luxembourg – bringing together 600,000 American and 25,000 British troops against 400,000 Germans – until the Allies prevailed in January 1945.
