Glyphosate is a herbicide widely used in modern agriculture to control weeds. Developed by the Monsanto company in the 1970s, this herbicide has been adopted by many farmers due to its effectiveness and low cost. However, the use of glyphosate raises serious public health and environmental concerns that can no longer be ignored.

On the one hand, scientific studies have suggested a link between exposure to glyphosate and various health problems, including cancers, neurological diseases, and hormonal disorders. The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified glyphosate as ” probably carcinogenic to humans in 2015, causing significant concern among consumers and public health advocates.

On the other hand, the intensive use of glyphosate has worrying environmental consequences. He contributes to the degradation of biodiversity by affecting local ecosystems, killing non-target plants and contaminating soil and water. Additionally, the emergence of resistance in some weeds, leading to increased use of herbicides, poses a major challenge for farmers and the agricultural sector in general.

Faced with these challenges, many countries and regions are considering measures to limit or ban the use of glyphosate. Ecological alternatives exist, such as crop rotation, mechanical weeding, and the use of biological herbicides, but require a paradigm shift in agricultural practices.

It is essential that decision-makers, farmers, and citizens mobilize to address the glyphosate problem. To protect our health, our environment, and guarantee sustainable agriculture, it is imperative to reduce our dependence on this controversial herbicide and explore methods that are more respectful of nature.
