Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg asked the court Tuesday to reject Donald Trump’s defense motion to overturn his indictment and guilty verdict in the Stormy Daniels case. Last May, Donald Trump was found guilty of hidden payments of $130,000 to the former X actress, before the 2016 presidential election.

Donald Trump’s lawyers recently called for the immediate cancellation of the case, citing in parallel the pardon granted by Joe Biden to his son Hunter. “This court should reject the defense’s appeal to ‘immediately’ overturn the indictment and the guilty verdict that the jury decided, based solely on the result of the last presidential election,” replied the prosecutor. He also added that “there is currently no basis for such a cancellation before the inauguration of the accused, because the immunity of an elected president does not exist. »

The final decision rests with Judge Juan Merchan

Even after the inauguration, Alvin Bragg believes that the temporary immunity of a sitting president does not justify overturning a verdict voted unanimously by a jury. As a compromise, he proposes “arrangements” to prevent the criminal procedure from weighing on the second presidency of Donald Trump.

Among the options considered: not imposing a prison sentence or suspending the procedure until the end of the presidential term in January 2029. Accusing the New York justice system of being “instrumentalized by his Democratic adversaries”, Donald Trump qualifies the “phony” affair. In charge of the trial, Judge Juan Merchan must now rule on these requests and proposals.
