impressive images of the damage from storm Bora

Since this Saturday, November 30, Greece has been hit by storm Bora. Already two people have died on the island of Limnos. Impressive images reveal the extent of the damage, particularly on the island of Rhodes affected by flooding.

Greece has been hit by devastating bad weather since Saturday. Heavy rains and unusual winds forced the Hellenic authorities to invite its residents to stay at home. Dramatic images show the damage caused in the north and center of the country.

Two people have already died since yesterday on the island of Limnos, in the Aegean Sea. A 57-year-old farmer died while trying to tow his car engulfed in mud by hooking it to his tractor, ERT television channel reported.

Another man aged 70 died on the Aegean island. While cleaning his stairs soiled by storm Bora, the septuagenarian fell to his death on his head.

The island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese, was also heavily affected. “Rhodes, last night, was severely tested. Dozens of evacuation operations had to be carried out, in particularly difficult conditions,” said the regional governor of the South Aegean, Yiorgos Hadjimarkos.

Athens firefighters sent as reinforcements

Already marked by considerable fires during the summer of 2023, the island is today shaken by floods such that an alert message from the Civil Protection services ordering residents to stay at home has been issued.

Vehicles have been banned from driving for 24 hours and emergency services are said to be on “high alert”. Around 20 firefighters from Athens were sent to Limnos and some 35 of them left for Rhodes.

More than a thousand calls were received by the fire brigade operations center between Saturday morning and Sunday.
