After several years under the colorful influence of the 1980s and the cocooning spirit of the 1970s, new trends are emerging in the world of design and decoration.

Now it is the turn of several styles that were predominant in the 1960s to come to the forefront. It is common, also in ready-to-wear, for certain past styles to come back into fashion.

But while some period pieces bring a strong identity and are welcome in your interior compositions, we will rather find these styles in the form of inspirations and new interpretations. A quick overview of the emerging trends.

Brutalism

The style was born from the use of raw concrete in architecture. It is characterized by geometric, rather massive shapes and the use of raw building materials.

Among several manufacturers, we find objects and pieces of furniture with a sculptural form that take up the brutalist spirit: in concrete, stone, metal, but also in wood.

To avoid the feeling of an interior that is too cold, we will mix these elements with other organic shapes, colored or covered in fabric.

Underlying, we also find the influence of modernism, particularly in its Californian version, and its desire for transparency with the use of glass. Tinted, smoked, structured or clear, it is found as a component of many pieces of furniture. It is willingly mixed with vegetation, with the idea of erasing the boundaries between interior and exterior.

Pop Design et Space Age

The 1960s also meant color, rounded and aerodynamic shapes. The race for space and the moon had a profound impact on the aesthetics of this era. We are rediscovering its influences in current forms of design. Many iconic models of the time, such as the “Ovalia” egg chair or the “Panton” chairs, are enjoying renewed interest.

The use of plastic as a material for the construction of objects and furniture, particularly as the shell of chair seats, is being updated in recycled and revalued versions.

The glossy finish, long discarded in favor of matte, is making a comeback with varnishes, enamel and even leather finishes. Chrome is once again a popular finish, while brass (long on trend) is fading a little. Stainless steel, aluminum and, in general, the use of “silver” metal is predominant, going so far as to cover the entirety of private kitchens. This radical aesthetic still retains some roundness.

In terms of color, there are two schools of thought. One of them keeps light and neutral shades. They are subtly mixed with pale greens or yellows in faded shades.

In the other, we play with marriages of warm shades, from burgundy red-brown to orange with purple accents.

We also see interiors that combine the two principles well, with a neutral base and pronounced touches of color.

Psychedelia

Even more fun, we can also imagine the return of an influence from the hippie and psychedelic movement. Although of social origin, these movements have also marked more than one generation in decoration.

We will find the ethnic and bohemian influence with the use of patterns, especially batik, and artisanal elements, often in wicker. The stylized floral patterns, tinged with “Peace & Love”, are already very popular!

As for the colorful organic and psychedelic shapes that intertwine, they are slowly coming back in application on fabrics, carpets or wallpapers. These playful shapes will be used sparingly in private interiors. So it’s the perfect time to take your lava lamp out of the cupboards!

You will have probably understood, if you are a fan of “James Bond” interiors, you will be delighted!
