Direct rail links between major European cities are lacking, according to a Greenpeace analysis. Geneva is among the worst-rated cities on the continent.

Calvin’s city only benefits from four direct rail links with the 44 other cities analyzed, none of which are night-time, the results published Tuesday reveal. These are the lines to Lyon, Milan, Paris and Zurich.

The journey to Milan is however interrupted until September for works.

Zurich, on the other hand, with 13 direct routes, performs well in European comparison.

Generally speaking, the continent’s major cities are much better connected by air than by direct trains, Greenpeace laments.

No fewer than 990 journeys between 45 cities were examined. Only 12% of the journeys under review are served by direct trains. For direct flights, the rate is 69%. The cities with the most direct rail connections are Vienna (17), Munich (15), Berlin (14), Paris and Zurich (13 each).

Greenpeace is calling on the Confederation and the SBB to “ensure that Zurich and especially Geneva are better served”. The organisation is also calling for the elimination of “tax advantages and subsidies for air transport”, the introduction of a tax on kerosene and a simplification of train reservation systems.
