Saint-Martin: violent arrest of a motorist in Marigot

A man suspected of domestic violence was arrested in the act of refusing to comply, during the intervention of the gendarmerie forces, in Marigot, this Monday morning. He ran over the foot of a soldier and, after a chase that ended in a collision, he did not give in when he was asked to get out of his vehicle. An investigation is open.

An investigation was opened in flagrante delicto by the Basse-Terre Public Prosecutor’s Office after a motorist was found guilty of a “refusal to comply aggravated by endangering the lives of others and involuntary injuries aggravated by the driver of the vehicle”indicates the public prosecutor Xavier Sicot.

The events in question took place on Monday 1is July 2024, around 10:45 a.m., in Marigot, on the island of Saint-Martin. They caused a ““huge traffic jam” in the area, reports the gendarmerie.

It was to intervene in a case of domestic violence (DV) that a patrol from the Marigot territorial brigade was engaged. When the soldiers arrived, the alleged perpetrator was in his vehicle. It was this man who, refusing to obey the injunctions of a gendarme, drove at him. The victim was run over in the foot.

Lined up by two police patrols, after having refused to comply several times and made U-turns, the man, during the maneuver, while the flow of traffic was dense, braked suddenly and the police vehicle could not avoid him and crashed into his pick-up.

Story of the Saint-Martin gendarmerie

Many images are circulating on social networks. We can see that the driver, stopped, refuses to get out of his vehicle, despite the numerous requests of the police officers, one of whom points his gun at him.
In the end, the police used force: they broke the driver’s side window of the car and tried several times to get the individual out, who clearly did not give in.

After several minutes, after reinforcements arrived on the scene, he was finally removed from the cabin, restrained on the ground and handcuffed by four soldiers.
