The National Rally (RN) and its allies came out on top in the first round of Sunday’s legislative elections, with 33.14% of the votes cast, according to the final results of the poll, published on Monday by the Ministry of the Interior.

Some 10,625,662 French people voted for the far-right party and its allies, the same source details.

In second position, the left, under the banner of the New Popular Front, reached 27.99% in the first round, or nearly 9 million votes.

The presidential majority, in third position, obtained 20.04% of the votes for almost 6.5 million votes.

The Republicans came in far behind the leading trio, in fourth place with 6.57% of the vote, or 2.1 million votes.

After the first round, 75 deputies, out of 577, are already elected. The RN obtains 37 seats, against 32 for the New Popular Front. Ensemble must be content with only two seats.

Some 49.5 million French people were called to the polls on Sunday for the first round of early legislative elections, called on June 9 by President Emmanuel Macron, who had decided to dissolve the National Assembly after the victory of the extreme right in the European elections. Some 4,010 candidates were in the running to compete for 577 seats in the National Assembly.

The turnout was 66.71% on Sunday, according to the final results from the Ministry of the Interior. The second round of the legislative elections will take place on Sunday, July 7.
