According to the minister, by 2024, biological rest will be implemented in two main phases (A and B) in accordance with the country’s hydrographic zones and in a progressive manner.

For maritime zone A, namely the Aby lagoon and that of Grand-Lahou, Sidi Touré indicated that for maritime artisanal fishing units, the complete closure is one month, from July 1 to July 31, 2024 and for semi-industrial and industrial fishing units, the closure to all species other than tuna will extend over a period of two months from July 1 to August 31, 2024.

Furthermore, tuna fishing units will be closed to this body of water from January 1 to March 13, 2024 for tuna seiner vessels fishing with Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) in accordance with recommendation 23-01 of the International Commission Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

As for zone B, the closure which affects Kossou and Buyo lakes runs from September to October 31, i.e. two months.

The provisional results obtained as part of monitoring the activities of fishing units during the first six months after the opening of maritime fisheries in 2023 indicate that for industrial trawler fishing the duration of tides is 7 to 8 days while it was 10 to 12 days, the minister said.

For sardine boats this duration is 36 to 48 hours compared to 72 hours before the measurement.

Ivory Coast is in its second consecutive year implementing biological rest.
