Germany and Finland say they are “deeply concerned” by the break in a telecom cable between their two countries.
An underwater telecommunications cable linking Finland to Germany has broken for reasons still unknown, the Finnish technology group Cinia announced on Monday. The two countries said they were “deeply concerned” by the rupture of a telecom cable.
“A thorough investigation is underway, our European security is not only threatened by Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, but also by hybrid wars waged by malicious actors,” the business ministers wrote foreign affairs of the two countries in a joint declaration transmitted by Berlin.
According to a press release, a fault was detected in the Cinia C-Lion1 submarine cable between Finland and Germany on November 18, 2024.
“The initial assessment” is that the cable has been “broken” because all the fiber connections on that cable are cut, an unnamed Cinia official told Finnish journalists.
An optical cable of 1,172 kilometers
“For the moment, it is not possible to assess the reason for the cable break, but this type of break does not occur in these waters without external impact,” the group added to journalists.
When questioned, the German government did not wish to comment on this matter. This 1,172 kilometer fiber optic cable has been connecting Helsinki and Rostock (north-eastern Germany) since 2016.
In October 2023, an underwater gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia had to be closed after damage caused by an anchor from a Chinese cargo ship. Finland has stepped up monitoring of incidents in the Baltic Sea since the outbreak of war between neighboring Russia and Ukraine.
