The events took place on November 11 when the young fisherman Harald Engen left, with his crew, to fish for halibut off the coast of Tromsø, in the north of Norway.
He is only 22 years old and was simply fishing with his crew aboard his boat Øygutt. On November 11, a young Norwegian who had left off the coast of Tromsø, in the north of Norway, had an unusual experience to say the least with the US Navy.
Indeed, according to the Norwegian press, Harald Engen brought back in his nets, not halibut as he hoped, but the propeller of a American nuclear attack submarine USS “Virginia”. A machine almost 115 meters long and 7,800 tons.
“We had just emptied the nets and were on our way to the Sommarøya fish farm when we were called by the coast guard“, said the fisherman. The latter then provided assistance to the submarine by cutting the fishing nets that were attached to the propeller.
And no injuries were reported, this incident still had a cost for Harald Engen since his nets had a value including between 3,400 euros and 4,300 euros. However, the coast guard reportedly told him that he would be compensated.
A refueling place
“The US 6th Fleet appreciates Norway's continued support to American submarine deployments to deter and defend the increasingly complex security environment in the northern regions”confided the US Navy.
According to a local trader, it is not uncommon to see US submarines pass through the Norwegian fjord since it is a crossing point where they can get supplies.
