Olaf Scholz leaves no doubt about his ability to win the early elections of February 23 which he himself called after having dismissed his liberal Minister of Finance on November 7.
Despite record unpopularity, unique in the history of the Federal Republic, the Chancellor is convinced that the Germans will re-elect him. “This election will confirm my political orientation,” he assured the Federal Assembly (Bundestag) on November 13. “Scholz would rather have his teeth operated on than admit his mistakes,” quipped Germany’s leading daily Bild.
But the Social Democratic Party (SPD) could decide otherwise. While Olaf Scholz has nominated himself as a candidate, the base is frustrated at not being able to give its opinion: “It’s true, it’s froggy [au SPD] », had to recognize Rolf Mützenich, the president of the parliamentary group, which supports Scholz’s candidacy.
