Although they would avoid the worst, these American regions should suffer the wrath of the remnants of Tropical Storm Sara. Forecast

Monster amounts of rain

Tropical Storm Sara developed off the Yucatán Peninsula on Thursday and its consequences are extreme. As of this writing, nearly 800 mm has fallen in La Ceiba, Honduras. It’s not over: the region should expect to receive up to 150 mm more by Sunday evening. As for regions further west, up to 250 mm of rain could be added. The risk of flooding and landslides is closely monitored in Honduras, Belize and Guatemala. A real disaster.

Good to know: Sara became the 18th named tropical storm of the season in the Atlantic basin. Although initial scenarios showed the possibility of it reaching hurricane status, Sara’s maximum sustained wind speeds did not exceed 85 km/h, due to a slight shift to the west.

Leftovers not to be neglected

After its devastating passage over the Yucatán Peninsula, Sara should continue to lose intensity and be downgraded to a post-tropical depression during the day on Monday. However, this would not be the end; the impressive mass of moisture left behind would haunt the states along the Gulf of Mexico. Louisiana and Mississippi would be the most affected: locally, rainfall amounts could exceed 100 mm from Tuesday to Wednesday morning. Potentially severe thunderstorms could dump a lot of rain in a short time on Tuesday. The risk of flash floods must therefore be monitored.

Remember that the United States was particularly affected by this hurricane season. In total, five hurricanes set their sights on the country, including Helene and Milton which wreaked historic havoc.
