Vamarr Hunter received an unexpected call in 2022. This phone call turned his life upside down since he discovered the identity of his biological mother who he had been looking for for years: Leonore Lindsey, a woman he knew since she worked in her favorite bakery. An incredible story that he recently told the American media.
On a beautiful spring day in 2022, an unexpected discovery changed the life of Vamarr Hunter, a resident of Chicago. While on the phone with a friend, he saw a call pop up on his phone from Give Me Some Sugah, his favorite bakery.
Although he had been warned of a future call that would be decisive in his quest to find his real mother, he ended up picking up. On the other end of the phone, Leonore Lindsey, owner of the bakery, asked him a question that left him speechless: “Are you Vamarr Hunter?”
The latter, who was engaged in research to find his biological mother, quickly understood that the person on the other end of the line was the one he had been looking for for months.
“We were in a state of total excitement”
“When I figured out who he was, we literally shouted on the phone. We were in a state of total excitement,” confided Lindsey, now 67 years old, in the columns of the Washington Post, this Thursday, November 14. In 1974, when she was only 17 years old, she had to place her son for adoption in a complicated family context.
Vamarr Hunter began the search to find his mother in March 2022, after being inspired by a television program devoted to genealogy. Thanks to the invaluable help of a genealogist based in California, he was able to piece together the missing pieces of his story.
“We immediately felt a connection. Everything fit together perfectly,” says Lindsey, who was struck by the resemblance between Hunter’s laugh and that of her own brother. Shortly after their reunion, Lindsey suffered a stroke in June 2022.
As she began her recovery, Hunter decided to lend her a hand by taking over the reins of her bakery. He then began to work even at night to guarantee the continuity of the activity.
An adventure that has continued since then, since in April 2023, he definitively left his previous job to invest full-time in Give Me Some Sugah to work with his mother.
