A 76-year-old monk died of his injuries after being attacked last weekend by an armed man in a monastery near Valencia, in southeastern Spain, we have just learned.
Sordid facts. Hospitalized in critical condition for two days, a 76-year-old monk died from his injuries this Monday afternoon. He was attacked by an armed man on Saturday morning in the Santo Espiritu del Monte monastery, in Gilet, near Valencia, Spain.
“The aggressor, carrying a blunt object, burst into the premises with a violent and provocative attitude” and roamed the corridors before injuring “three of our brothers”, the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin said in a press release. The attacker was then put to flight by one of the monks who immediately called for help.
The attacker arrested
Questioned by the Spanish daily El Pais, the latter described a man seeming to be driven mad at the time of his intrusion.
“He shouted: I am going to kill the brothers, I am Jesus Christ” and grabbed several objects, including “sticks” and “a bottle”, to hit the religious present, he said.
Gilet town hall indicated that the attacker was arrested this Sunday after fleeing into the surrounding mountains.
According to local media, the attacker is a 46-year-old Spaniard suffering from psychiatric problems and a drug addiction. He should be presented this Tuesday to an investigating judge.
