It is in Nouakchott that the outgoing president, Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani, and three other competitors began a marathon which will last two weeks.

Among the candidates, also include the leader of Tawassoul, of the Islamist movement, the main force of the parliamentary opposition, Hamadi Sid’El Moctar, the anti-slavery deputy, Biram Dah Abeid, who began his campaign in the river valley, in Kaédi.

The other candidates are Me El Id Mohamed M’Bareck, Dr Ottoman Soumaré, Pr Ba Mamadou Bocar and Mohamed Mourtaj El Wafi. For the occasion, Nouakchott is dotted with tents, serving as a permanent location for candidates.

The current president launched his campaign at the Cheikha ould Boydiya stadium in Nouakchott, in front of a huge crowd. Ghazouani took stock of his five years of governance and presented “numerous achievements in the fight against exclusion“. He subsequently announced that his candidacy is “dedicated to youth and the fight against corruption“.

Candidate El Id Mohamed MBareck launched his campaign at the place of the old Nouakchott airport. He focused his speech “on national unity, the fight against slavery, the reform of the education system and the fight against corruption“.

Sid El Moctar ould Hamadi, candidate for Tawassoul, leader of the opposition, pleaded for the smooth conduct of the vote, with transparency and equality for all Mauritanians, in accordance with the precepts of Islam.
