In India, it is not good to deprive a high-ranking person of his favorite appetizers. The incident took place last month during a visit by the chief executive of the state of Himachal Pradesh (north), Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, to the regional headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the local judicial police.

His hosts had planned to treat the minister to samosas, these small savory bites of meat or vegetables coated in dough which are the delight of many Indians. But, in circumstances that the investigations intend to clarify, the said samosas were gobbled up by five police officers before they could even be presented to the minister.

Simple mistake or deliberate gesture? The CID ruled by describing the incident in a report as nothing less than “an act directed against the government”. “This report adds that the personnel involved had acted on their own initiative, worrying about deliberate misconduct,” adds the document, cited by the specialized daily “Economic Times”. The five gluttonous police officers were summoned by their superiors to explain their feast, said the newspaper “Indian Express”. They must appear before their superiors and risk disciplinary action.
