The former environmental lawyer and activist grew up in a political dynasty as he is the nephew of former Democratic President John F. Kennedy and son of Senator Robert Francis Kennedy.
The 70-year-old man then decided to enter the race for the Democratic nomination in April 2023 with a view to the presidential election.
The Democratic Party, however, had dismissed him because of his career marred by controversy in recent years, after having notably made conspiratorial and anti-vaccine remarks.
Disappointed with the Biden administration in the last year, he therefore chose to run as an independent in the electoral race in October 2023.
Faced with very low support, he finally preferred to suspend his campaign this summer. He then rallied behind Donald Trump, whose team had already courted him on several occasions, in order to try to get closer to power.
A place in power: healthy?
The election of the Republican this week will have finally launched the debate on the place that Robert F. Kennedy J could haver within a Trump administration.
If we could have thought that he would obtain a role in the environment with his background, it would however be quite different.
“Among the names to highlight, there is also Robert Kennedy Junior. He will give us a helping hand in restoring a health system worthy of the name for Americans,” Donald Trump underlined during his victory speech on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday.
“He’s a very good guy and he wants to accomplish things, but I said to him, ‘Bobby, leave the oil business to me. […] Bobby, stay away from oil, but other than that, you can have fun,’” he said.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr could therefore be entrusted with the control of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), but also of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which arouses a lot of fear among some.
