The two leaders discussed “the lasting and profitable partnership between Canada and the United States,” the Canadian Prime Minister’s office said in a press release.
They also spoke about “the Canada – United States – Mexico Agreement that President Trump and Prime Minister Trudeau successfully negotiated during the president’s first term,” it was added.
The conversation also focused on their “common interest in secure and reliable supply chains and combating unfair trade practices in the global economy.”
The issue of North American security was also discussed.
During the call, Justin Trudeau discussed a part of the political journey of his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, as he congratulated Donald Trump on his extraordinary victory.
He mentioned to the president-elect that his father had also lost an election before making a comeback and winning the next one, which Donald Trump appreciated, said a source familiar with the exchange.
The telephone interview, which lasted around twenty minutes, was “warm,” said the same source.
Before Justin Trudeau, many foreign leaders had a call with the man who will officially become the 47e President of the United States on January 20.
This list includes, among others, Benjamin Netanyahu (Israel), Emmanuel Macron (France), Giorgia Meloni (Italy), Keir Starmer (United Kingdom), Narendra Modi (India), Xi Jinping (China), Volodymyr Zelensky (Ukraine) as well as Viktor Orbán (Hungary).
In November 2020, Justin Trudeau was the first foreign leader to whom President Joe Biden made a phone call.
