Vice President and defeated Democratic candidate Kamala Harris spoke publicly on Wednesday for the first time since announcing her defeat in the presidential election. She promised Donald Trump “a peaceful transition of power.”

“The result of this election is not the one we wanted, not the one we fought for,” she said at the start of her speech.

She still conceded the election to her rival, Donald Trump, adding that she was not, however, conceding “the fights that fueled the campaign. The fight for freedom, for opportunity and for fairness and dignity for all.”

Earlier today, she called Donald Trump to congratulate him on his victory.

The two notably agreed on the need to unify the country, according to the spokesperson for the Republican candidate.

Donald Trump was elected for a second term at the White House on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, even if some results were still slow to be revealed.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Republican had 295 voters, compared to 224 for the Democrat.
