For Larry Sabato, if Kamala Harris does not far exceed the threshold of 270 voters, Donald Trump and his supporters will create many problems, and a new insurrection cannot be ruled out.
It’s the big day in the United States: the population will vote today to elect their president. While the fight between the two candidates promises to be very close, the director of the University of Virginia, Larry Sabato, spoke about this historic day.
“I think the more Kamala Harris wins, the harder it will be for Republicans to ignore this result and try to push her below 270 voters. It would probably also spark a revolt. Huge dangers await us“, he explains.
But his greatest concern concerns the voters. “What worries me most is the voters, because several states have Trumpist governors and local legislators. I have no doubt that Trump will push them to manipulate the electoral votes. I don’t want to say we’ll have another insurrection, but it’s hard to imagine protesters won’t show up. They will push for Trump voters to be counted and for the electors, influenced by the population of certain states, to be excluded. It wouldn’t take many states to turn a close election into a scenario where the House of Representatives would have to choose the next president. One of the candidates must obtain 270 electoral votes. If they fail to do so, then it will not be the entire House that votes, but each state delegation will have one vote. The District of Columbia will have no vote.
While the results have not yet been announced, Donald Trump and his supporters are already talking about rigging of the election by the Democratic camp. An attitude that the director considers scandalous.
“This is undeniably the most secure election ever held in the United States. There are so many safeguards, as there were already in 2020. We all know that Donald Trump invented the ‘big lie’, period. You have to tell the truth. And the truth is that he is the author“.
Another question that often comes up is: will America remain divided, despite the outcome of the election? Larry Sabato gave his opinion: “I hope not, but I think probably, yes. If I had to guess today, I don’t see what could heal this divide. These are deeply rooted feelings on both sides, and one side believes their presidency was stolen, even though there is absolutely no evidence of this. In fact, the evidence shows just the opposite. But what do you do when about half of your population refuses to accept reality? What to do? This clearly shows that we need a revision of the Constitution. But, of course, that will never happen. We will face this problem every four years“.
