Enough is enough! Staff unions at the Baie-Mahault Prison Center expressed their anger this Monday by blocking access to the site; their movement is renewable, unless they obtain satisfaction with their demands. The condition of the prison officer who was scalded on Sunday is said to be “impactful”. This is yet another agent attacked within the prison, where prison overcrowding is significant.

They announced yesterday their intention to mobilize at dawn, this Monday, October 28, 2024 : prison guard unions have been blocking access to the Baie-Mahault Prison Center, in Fonds Sarail, since 5:00 a.m. They denounce, through this demonstration of anger, the umpteenth attack on a colleague, which occurred yesterday, shortly after noon.

An agent, aged 52, was hospitalized at the University Hospital of Guadeloupe, after being scalded by an inmate; the latter allegedly doused him with scalding water from a rice cooker. The victim, seriously burned, was hit in the face and left arm. If his life is not in danger, he is likely to have the after-effects of this act of violence.

The inter-union mobilized this Monday has several demands. The first is that the attacker be incarcerated in another establishment. The striking personnel are also asking for human resources, in particular to ensure the security of the Baie-Mahault site. They also ask to be received by the Overseas Mission dedicated to the situation in prisons in overseas territories.

We are fed up with the prison administration. The unions, we had already sounded the alarm, concerning prison overcrowding, which leads to attacks on staff and between prisoners. It didn't miss yesterday !

If the staff do not obtain a response to their requests this Monday, they threaten to continue blocking the penitentiary center tomorrow. Currently, no one can enter or leave.

We are in total lockdown. Nothing comes out, nothing comes in. At some point, the administration must assume its responsibilities. Our demands go back several months, even years, but they are not taken into consideration! This time we hit hard!

Quickly subdued in his cell after Sunday's attack by the prison's prison security team (ESP), the person responsible was taken to the disciplinary unit. This man is already the target of several reports, because of his recurring violent behavior. On Sunday, he also had a homemade pick in his hand, according to Jean-Jacques Racamy.
