Between 26,000 and 31,000 people called for action by the authorities to fight against what they call “colonialism”

“Canarias tiene un límite”, “the Canaries have a limit” it is behind this banner that parades bringing together thousands of people took place in several places in the Canary Islands this Sunday.

The demonstrators intended to protest against mass tourism, which continues to pose problems and which, according to them, the authorities refuse to curb.

Disgruntled residents are demanding tourist quotas and a radical change in the way visitors are welcomed.

Activists say the influx of tourists is ruining residents’ lives. Reports indicate that some residents are now sleeping in cars and caves due to soaring property prices.

“It’s not normal that we, the Canarians, have to leave our land to be able to live comfortably,” explains a resident.

“They ignore us, as if we don’t exist and we don’t matter.” deplores another.

The second event this year

Six months after the last major demonstration on April 20, the marches took place, Tenerife and Gran Canaria, Playa de las Américas and Maspalomasthe epicenters of the tourism sector for decades.

According to authorities, some 6,500 people took part in the march at Playa de las Américas in Tenerife.

It took place along the promenade, which was packed with visitors enjoying the sun and a day at the beach.

In 2023, the archipelago attracted 14.1 million foreign visitors.
