New controversy has erupted following the release of images showing the wife of Yahya Sinwar, former Hamas leader, carrying a Birkin bag estimated at $32,000. These images, dated October 6, 2023, were posted by IDF Arabic spokesperson Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee on social media.
“While people in Gaza have no money to feed themselves, we see many examples of Yahya Sinwar and his wife’s special love for money,” Adraee said on X. He added : “Did Sinwar’s wife enter the tunnel with him on October 6 carrying a Birkin bag valued at around $32,000?!”
The revelations come after IDF spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari released footage showing Sinwar and his family fleeing into a tunnel hours before the October 7 massacre. “For hours, they went back and forth, stocking up on food, a television and other necessities for a long stay. He only cared about his personal survival,” Hagari commented.
The bag in question would be a Hermès Birkin 25, a luxury accessory whose price can reach several tens of thousands of dollars. This revelation sparked numerous reactions on social networks, with some Internet users expressing their indignation at this contrast between the luxury displayed and the precarious situation of the population in Gaza.
“I didn’t know people in open-air prisons used Birkin bags,” one user quipped in response to Adraee’s post. Before his elimination, Sinwar’s personal fortune was estimated at three billion dollars. Thousands of shekels were found on him after his death.
