A father lost his life, crushed by a tree, in front of his children. This tragic accident occurs after exceptional rains which affected the south-east of the country.
A man died Thursday evening in Paris, victim of a falling tree. The tragedy occurred in the 19th arrondissement, while the man was walking with his two daughters. They were injured and taken to hospital. She is 3 and 5 years old.
Météo France has lifted the red “flood” and “rain-flood” alert in all French departments. However, 18 departments in the south of the country remain on orange alert. Floods are still possible in 9 departments, while 10 departments are on alert for risks of rain-flooding.
“Exceptional” rains in the southeast
The Cévennes episode which affected the central-east and south-east of France was marked by rains of rare intensity. Up to 600 to 700 millimeters of precipitation were recorded in certain areas of Ardèche. These torrential rains caused flooding, flash floods and landslides, requiring the evacuation of more than a thousand people.
The bad weather also caused significant disruptions to the transport and electricity networks. Several roads and highways were closed, as well as railway lines. Thousands of homes were left without electricity.
Climate disruption singled out
The Minister of Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, described the situation as “unprecedented in its scale“and established a direct link between these extreme weather episodes and climate change.”600 millimeters of water on the Ardèche is unheard of in living memory” she said.
