Lebanese Red Cross reports 18 dead in strike on northern village

Eighteen people were killed in an Israeli strike targeting the village of Aïto in northern Lebanon, the local Red Cross said, while the Health Ministry reported that “relief efforts continue.”

This is the first time that Aïto, a village located in a predominantly Christian mountainous region, has been targeted since the Islamist movement Hezbollah and Israel entered into open war on September 23. The strike targeted an apartment, according to the Lebanese national agency ANI.

According to an AFP photographer, human remains were visible in front of the building located at the entrance to the village which was razed by the strike, amid the comings and goings of ambulances.

Hezbollah announced Monday that it had targeted a barracks near Netanya, a coastal city north of Tel Aviv in central Israel. For its part, the Israeli army said it had intercepted several projectiles fired from Lebanon.

The Hamas government’s Health Ministry announced a new death toll of 42,289 in the Palestinian territory since the start of the war with Israel more than a year ago.
