“It’s probably the first time I’ve played in front of Federer”

Lots of people were in the stands to watch this final: Carlos Alcarazhis trainer Juan Carlos Ferrero and a certain Roger Federer. During his speech, Djokovic addressed a few words to the Maestro. “It’s nice to see Roger, I’m not used to seeing you in the stands. I would have liked you to be on court to play with us, but it’s probably the first time I’ve played in front of you, so I had extra pressure today (laughs). Thanks for coming, Carlos and Juan Carlos too,” he declared on the court.

“He reminds me of myself throughout my career”

In conference, the Serb was amazed by the level of Sinner. “He has improved his service enormously. I think it has become an important weapon. He is very aggressive from the baseline, as soon as he has a shorter ball, he takes the initiative. He is very solid on the forehand and backhand, doesn’t make too many mistakes and tries to waste his opponent’s time. It’s something that reminds me of myself throughout my career, it’s what I’ve done for so many years consistently. Play fast , waste your opponent’s time, suffocate him in a certain way. You want your opponent to always feel under pressure because of your shots, your speed, your presence on the court. That’s what he does. This year he has been very consistent. It’s really, really impressive.

“I still intend to play next season”

While its biggest rivals have almost all retired, Absent has no intention of stopping just yet. “My main motivation comes from the love and passion for this sport, as well as the desire to continue competing. These are the matches and challenges that I always look to overcome, to be able to play against the best players in the world, on the biggest stage, in the finals of some of the biggest tournaments in the world. This is what I work for and why I continue to surpass myself. That’s all that can be said about it. I don’t know what the future holds for me. I’ll just try to go with the flow and see how I feel at any given moment. I still plan to compete and play next season, and we’ll see how far I get. Currently the plan is to come home, but next week there is the Six Kings Slam in Saudi Arabia, I will perform it, and then we will see where I will go.

“I have already achieved all the major goals of my career”

The 100th title is a bonus if it can happen. I wish this would happen today, but it doesn’t. I will continue to give everything to make this happen soon; it’s not a life or death goal, I think I’ve already achieved all the big goals in my career. For now, the most important thing is the Grand Slams and seeing how high I can raise the bar. As long as I continue to play like I did this week, and I believe that I can still compete against the best, as long as that continues, I imagine that I will continue to feel the need to compete and the motivation to be on the ground. We’ll see how long it lasts.
