Population aging is a major global trend reshaping societies around the world. Life expectancy at birth now exceeds 75 years in around half of the world’s countries, or 25 years more than in 1950. By 2030, the elderly should therefore globally outnumber the elderly. young people, particularly in developing countries. This demographic shift has significantly transformed the caregiving landscape, which encompasses a wide range of paid and unpaid care needs, in either formal or informal settings.

Indeed, as populations age, the demand for comprehensive health and social care services has increased significantly, particularly for older people suffering from conditions such as dementia. Recognizing these challenges and opportunities, the 34th commemoration of the International Day of Older Persons will focus on the theme “Aging with dignity: the importance of strengthening systems of care and support for older people around the world”.

This year’s event will therefore bring together experts to discuss policies, legislation and practices that strengthen health and aged care systems. It will highlight the urgent need to expand training and education opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology and address the global healthcare workforce shortage. The commemoration will also highlight the importance of protecting the human rights of both care recipients and caregivers, promoting person-centered approaches to care that respect the dignity, beliefs, needs and privacy of older people, including the right to make decisions about their own care and the quality of their lives.
