The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine was jointly awarded on Monday to the Americans Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in the post-transcriptional regulation of genes, the organization awarding the prize announced on Monday.
Gary Ruvkun and Victor Ambros are molecular biologists.
“Their revolutionary discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that has proven essential for multicellular organisms, including humans,” writes the Nobel Assembly at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute, which awards the Nobel in Physiology or medicine.
Last year, the Nobel Prize in Medicine recognized the advances of Hungarian researcher Katalin Kariko and her American colleague Drew Weissman in the development of messenger RNA vaccines, decisive in the fight against Covid-19.
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is the first of the prizes awarded each year in the name of the Nobel Foundation.
The Nobel Prize in Physics will be awarded on Tuesday, followed by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry on Wednesday, the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday and the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. The Nobel Prize in Economics will close the awards on Monday October 14. Awarded since 1901, the Nobel Prizes reward “benefactors of humanity”.
