The head of American intelligence, William Burns, is expected in Doha for a “emergency meeting” with the Prime Minister of Qatar on negotiations for a truce in the Gaza Strip, a Source close to the discussions told AFP on Sunday.

The Source, who requested anonymity, said Burns was on his way to the Qatari capital to speak with Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, whose country participated in mediation efforts alongside of Egypt and the United States, with a view to a truce between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the release of hostages.

The latest indirect talks between Hamas and Israel “having failed in Cairo, CIA Director Burns heads to Doha for an emergency meeting with the Prime Minister of Qatar to discuss ways to get the talks back on track”said the Source.

A meeting in Cairo on a proposed truce associated with the release of hostages in the Gaza Strip ended Sunday without progress, while Israel and Hamas remain inflexible after seven months of war. A delegation from the Palestinian Islamist movement will, however, return to Egypt on Tuesday to resume negotiations, according to the Egyptian media close to intelligence, Al-Qahera News.
