Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro admitted to hospital

VSn Sunday, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said he had been admitted to hospital. “I am hospitalized at the Santa Julia Hospital in Manaus. I have erysipelas, no planned discharge date from the hospital,” said the leader of the Brazilian far right, aged 69, on the X network.

Erysipelas is a bacterial infection characterized by inflammation of the skin. A painful red patch most often appears on the legs and sometimes on the face, accompanied by fever.

Mr. Bolsonaro “was admitted (…) yesterday (Saturday) morning due to dehydration and a skin infection,” Santa Julia hospital said in a statement on Sunday. “He remains hospitalized for intravenous antibiotic therapy and rehydration,” it is added.

The former president (2019-2022) arrived in Manaus, capital of the Brazilian Amazon, on Friday to support MP Alberto Neto, candidate for mayor of Manaus, in the state of Amazonas.

On Sunday, Mr. Neto posted a photo on his social media of himself alongside Mr. Bolsonaro, smiling, lying in a hospital room.

As the municipal elections approach in October, the former president is traveling the country to support his party’s candidates.

In recent years, Mr. Bolsonaro has undergone several surgical operations, the last of which was in September 2023 in Sao Paulo, for complications relating to the stabbing received in 2018 in the abdominal region during the electoral campaign.
