Unable to find a sterile scalpel, an English surgeon operated on a patient with a Swiss army knife in a Brighton hospital, reports the BBC. The doctor opened the chest of the patient who survived this unusual operation.

The clinic in Brighton, in the south of England, reported an emergency procedure: the doctor could not find a sterile scalpel at the time of the operation and used the knife he normally used to cut his fruit for lunch.

At the same time, the hospital stressed that the surgeon’s intervention “did not correspond to the usual procedure and would not have been necessary.” According to the BBC, colleagues found the behavior “questionable” and were surprised the doctor couldn’t find a scalpel.

“This surprises and dismays me,” Graeme Poston, an expert in medical negligence, told the public broadcaster. “First of all, a pocket knife is not sterile. Second, it’s not a surgical instrument. And third, all the equipment had to be there.”
