In Greece, the two main left-wing opposition parties condemned the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last week by Israel.
“The terrorist state of Israel is pursuing, with the blessing and support of the United States, NATO and the EU, a widespread war against the peoples of the Middle East, with unpredictable consequences for the whole in the region and at the international level,” the Communist Party of Greece said in a statement on Monday.
The party said the assassinations of Nasrallah and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh last July, and threats of a ground attack on Lebanon, as well as the ongoing genocide in Gaza, “show that a plan is underway to intensify the war and imperialist interventions, the impact of which extends beyond the borders of the Middle East.
The party also accused Greece’s conservative government of being complicit in Israel’s crimes by providing it with political, economic and military support.
On Sunday, the main left-wing opposition party, Syriza, warned that “a new regional war without rules, with a large civilian population, is looming on the horizon with implications that go beyond the geographical borders of the Middle East.” .
“The region is on the verge of a widespread conflagration for which the responsibility lies with the United States and Israel, who, through their actions, contribute to the marginalization of the UN, abolish multilateral diplomacy and go so far as to undermine international peace “, the party said in a statement in response to Nasrallah’s assassination.
The party also called on the government to take immediate initiatives, in collaboration with other governments, to bring about just peace in the region.
Israel has been carrying out massive airstrikes against what it says are Hezbollah targets across Lebanon since September 23, killing more than 960 people and injuring more than 2,770 others, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. .
Several Hezbollah leaders, including its Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah, were killed during these attacks.
Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a cross-border war since the start of the Israeli offensive against the Gaza Strip, which has left nearly 41,600 people dead, mainly women and children, since October 7 last year. .
The international community has warned that Israeli attacks on Lebanon could cause the Gaza conflict to escalate into a larger regional war.
