The former special representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) in Libya was received on April 25 by the Head of State.

Abdoulaye Bathily visited the Republic of Congo in his capacity as chair of the African Union (AU) High-Level Committee on Libya. The Senegalese informed Sassou Nguesso of the deterioration of the situation in recent months in Libya.

“The situation in Libya has deteriorated significantly in recent months. In my successive reports to the Security Council, I alerted it to what is happening in Libya. During the 19 months of my activity in this country, I toured the country and met everyone,” explained Abdoulaye Bathily.

Abdoulaye Bathily deplores the fact that Libyan leaders are sticking to their position when they should be meeting around a table to discuss, find consensus if not compromise to move the country forward.

“As long as there is no agreement and political will from these Libyan leaders to save their country from the disintegration that is the threat; as long as there is not the will of their regional and international partners to help these Libyans come together, in the short and medium term I do not see the solution,” declared Mr. Bathily.

Remember that Abdoulaye Bathily presented his resignation to the UN Secretary General on April 15.
