On Wednesday, May 15, the inauguration of the commemorative plaque in honor of Nelly Commergnat took place on the pediment of Bonnat town hall.

The ceremony brought together, among others, Mayor Philippe Chavant; Hélène Pilat and Guy Marsaleix, the departmental councilors of the canton of Bonnat; Thierry Chandernagor, whose father was the predecessor of Nelly Commergnat in the second constituency of Creuse; members of the Municipal Council, but also and above all, the children of Nelly Commergnat, Laurence and Richard.

Mayor at 30, deputy at 41

Before his son and daughter discovered the plaque, Philippe Chavant and Hélène Pilat gave an overview of the career of this illustrious elected official from Creuse. Nelly Commergnat, born in 1943 and died in 2021, arrived in Creuse when she followed her husband, a veterinarian.

“Passionate about horses, she soon discovered another passion, politics,” laughed Philippe Chavant. Before adding: “She became mayor of Bonnat in 1973 at only 30 years old.” She will also be the first woman deputy for Creuse in 1981.

From the Socialist Party, the woman is described by the mayor as “the standard of Mitterrandian socialism”, who brought “Bonnat into modernity”. It is notably thanks to his actions that the town now has a new college, a retirement home, social housing, agricultural trails and services such as meals on wheels.

Hélène Pilat was keen to highlight her investment in the agricultural world, as well as her fights to support the cause of women in politics. Nelly Commergnat remained in the minds of Creuse as “a tenacious woman, who followed her ideas through to the end”. Although she confessed at the end of her career “the harshness and violence of the political world”.

It was with great emotion in their eyes that her children revealed the inscription “A Creuse politician”. Their mother’s name is now displayed on the facade of the town hall of a town, for which she gave nearly 20 years of her life.
