Pro-Palestinian encampment at McGill: protesters display “intimidating behavior”

McGill University officials are concerned about “intimidating behavior” by certain pro-Palestine protesters who set up an encampment on the Montreal campus.

After viewing videos last night, university management noted that “individuals behave in an intimidating manner and make clearly anti-Semitic comments,” which is considered “totally unacceptable,” explained Michel Proulx, director, by email. of Communications at McGill University.

“We strongly and unreservedly condemn these actions and comments and will immediately carry out an investigation,” he added.

A camp that has tripled

If more than twenty tents were already erected on Saturday, their number had already “tripled” as of Monday, according to the communications director.

Most of the protesters present, “if not the majority”, would not be members of the Montreal institution, specified Mr. Proulx.

According to officials, this encampment contravenes “both the freedom to make one’s voice heard and the freedom to assemble peacefully.”

No dismantling planned

The university is in contact with lawyers for the students occupying the camp “to discuss measures to preserve security as well as the adoption of a timetable for dismantling the tents.”

The students in question, however, refused to continue discussions and indicated that they intended to remain “on campus for an indefinite period,” said Mr. Proulx.
