To obtain their results, the researchers asked participants to answer the simple question: “At what age can you say someone is old?”. Once the data was collected, they were able to identify the age of old age according to the perception of individuals. “We found that at the age of 64 years oldthe average perception of the onset of old age is around 75 years old“, indicate the researchers.
The latter seems have evolved over generations. Indeed, the youngest participants perceive the age at which a person is old later than their elders. For example, when participants born in 1911 were aged 65 yearsthey fixed the beginning of old age at 71 years old. In contrast, participants born in 1956 reported that old age was beginning to 74 years oldwhen they reached the same age.
How can we explain this later perception among the youngest? L’increasing life expectancy and increasing retirement age could play on the fact that people, previously considered old, are no longer so today.
