Civil Nuclear | Somalia Becomes 179th Member of International Atomic Energy Agency

Somalia joined the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Monday, September 16, at the general conference held in Vienna.

Somalia described the accession as an important step reflecting the country’s commitment to promoting the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
“This is a historic moment for our country, which underlines our commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear energy and sustainable development,” the Somali prime minister’s office wrote in a statement released Monday.
For Daud Aweis, Somalia’s Minister of Information, as a member of the UN nuclear watchdog, “Somalia looks forward to working with the international community to harness nuclear technology for the benefit of our nation and to ensure the highest standards of safety and security.”
He indicated Somalia’s willingness to use nuclear energy responsibly to support sustainable development and improve the quality of life of Somali citizens.
Somalia is the newest and 179th member of the United Nations nuclear watchdog.
