After 164 hours of debate, the examination of 4,454 amendments and discussions interrupted for several weeks due to the change of government, the draft budget of France finally passed, Thursday, January 23, the Cape of the Senate. It was adopted there by a large majority of 217 votes against 105, and 22 abstentions. Right and center groups supporting the government of François Bayrou voted for, the left and the extreme right have rejected it.
The end of the budget tunnel now seems in sight. Next step: the joint joint committee scheduled for January 30, where deputies and senators will try, behind closed doors, to find a compromise on the text, rejected by the National Assembly at first reading. Then the budget will be subject to the vote of parliamentarians in early February. The government hopes to have its text adopt in the assembly despite the absence of a majority, thanks to the abstention of the socialists, still uncertain. France, which started the year without budget for the first time in forty-five years, could then leave the regime of the special law.
