Hello everyone!
The year 2024 has been as busy as usual for the Star Wars license on television! We had two live series (The Acolytfrom and Skeleton Crewending its broadcast in 2025 but still starting in 2024) and two animated series (the sequel and end of The Bad Batch as well as The Adventures of the Little Jedi).
Although absent from cinemas since the end of the Skywalker saga (we will talk about upcoming films in a future article in this 2025 update), the license remains very active on small screens, the result of strong strategic decisions taken at launch of the Disney+ streaming platform.
After intense activity (some will call it “StarWars fatigue”), is the future of live series becoming murky? Well a little because the projects, once announced well in advance and numerous, are becoming rarer without disappearing!
It is therefore time to take stock, project by project, to see a little more clearly between those already having a clear release date, those made official and those simply under consideration in the Lucasfilm offices!
04/22/2025 – The second season ofAndor
The highly anticipated (and very expensive) final season ofAndor is the one and only live action project with a fixed date: meet on April 22! This season will have 12 episodes divided into four blocks of three episodes, representing a year and taking us chronologically to the beginning of Rogue One. There is no doubt that the promotion should begin after the end of the broadcast of Skeleton Crew.
Although season 1 was not the most viewed, it remains an obvious and excellent critical success. This is personally the project that I am looking forward to the most!
Although quick, we had some images in a teaser from Disney+ about the platform’s 2025 productions (here).
INDETERMINE – Ahsoka : When is season 2 coming?
And that’s it… We’re already getting into live action projects without a clear release date!
-If we are aware of the start of a season 2 at Ahsoka since last January, we have not had any official news since. However, some rumors have reached us! Particularly with regard to the filming which should take place in the summer of 2025 according to comments made by Natasha Liu Bordizzo (Sabine Wren). Additionally, following the death of Ray Stevenson, the actor playing Baylan Skoll, rumors regarding his replacement recently appeared (here).
We would therefore most likely have to wait until at least 2026 to discover this continuation of the adventures of our favorite togruta!
INDETERMINE – Everything else?
From now on, nothing is official. Indeed, The Acolyte yet planned for several seasons was canceled. Skeleton Crew has not yet received a green light for a sequel either and audience results probably below expectations given the budget allocated seem to work against the future of this show. Moreover, recently, speaking to Vulture, Alan Bergman, an executive at Disney, clarified that the performances of Skeleton Crew are actually analyzed very closely by the firm to decide its future. We’ll see.
In this article, Bergman also explains that several series projects are in “development”. This absolutely does not mean that any future very clear series is ready to be broadcast. Disney/Lucasfilm are simply thinking of ideas to continue the adventure of the saga on the small screen.
Final reminder: the project Landoinitially planned as a series would instead be developed as a film.
CONCLUSION – 2024, a failure for Star Wars on the small screen?
We have to admit that the saga has seen better days. After the resounding success of The Mandalorian propelling the iconic duo to the rank of cultural phenomenon, the license struggles to attract crowds and generate interest for the general public as evidenced by the latest audience results.
It therefore seems logical given this observation (and given a probable rapid return to the cinema of the saga) that the studios take the time before announcing new projects. Or not. Maybe we will have clearer information at the next Celebration? Who knows?
In any case, stay tuned to SWU to follow the latest news on live action TV series! And if you are interested in participating in the site and giving us a little help, the position of animated series television staffer is up for grabs!
