The President of the National Assembly revealed on Friday that she had breast cancer three years ago, which has now been cured.

But she urges all women to go get tested.

“If you need to make a good resolution at the start of the year, I can only recommend that you go get tested,” she says.

“Like more than 60,000 women each year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer just 3 years ago.” In a video posted on . “Today I am doing well. I am on hormone therapy and I am followed regularly by a team of caregivers who throughout this process have been tremendously committed and dedicated”she adds.

If she chose to reveal this information to the media Ladies (new window)it is to raise awareness of the importance of screening (new window). “I had breast cancer which was detected in (…) as part of traditional screening which allowed me to catch it early”, “Today I am cured of it and therefore it is thanks to screening”she proclaims. “Like many, I have sometimes left the envelopes from the national screening campaign or my doctor’s prescription lying around on the living room table. In 2022, in the series of good New Year’s resolutions, I said to myself : ‘Come on, I’m going now’. I made an appointment for a mammogram… and that’s when my cancer was detected.”she continues. “So, if you need to make a good resolution at the start of the year, I can only recommend that you go get screened. Breast cancer, colon cancer, cervical cancer… don’t wait more!”

1 in 2 women do not get screened

While breast cancer is “the leading cause of cancer death among women”, “nearly one in two women do not take the screening to which they are entitled every two years”underlines the Renaissance MP from to Ladies. “All women must do this screening”she insists.

On the occasion of Pink October, Public Health revealed that France stagnated around 50% participation in generalized national screening in 2004, far from the European objective of at least 70%. “After increasing until 2011-2012 to reach a peak at 52.3%, participation in the screening program decreased gradually, for all age groups and in all regions”she observed. In 2022-2023, participation stood at 46.5%, lower than in 2021-2022. Organized breast cancer screening concerns women between 50 and 74 years old, without symptoms and who have no particular risk factors for breast cancer, other than their age. When it is detected early, breast cancer is cured in 9 out of 10 cases, specifies Health Insurance.
