Jean-Marie Le Pen, a historic figure of the French far right, was buried Saturday afternoon in the cemetery of his hometown, La Trinité-sur-Mer, in western France, following a mass celebrated in the strictest family privacy.

Around 200 people – including his daughter Marine Le Pen, who had taken over the reins of the party co-founded by her father, the National Front (FN), which has since become the National Rally (RN) – attended the funeral tribute in the church Saint Joseph. The president of RN, Jordan Bardella was also present, but he stayed away from the cameras, according to several sources.
At the end of a ceremony which lasted approximately two hours, a grieving Marine Le Pen, members of her family and relatives of the former far-right leader who died Tuesday at the age of 96 followed the hearse to the cemetery, a few hundred meters away.
The town of around 1,700 people had been placed under close surveillance by the police to avoid any excesses or demonstrations, but the day passed without the slightest incident.
