After the immense success of Downton Abbeyall six seasons of which are available on NetflixJulian Fellowes is already preparing his new project. This is the television series adaptation of the saga of detective novels Commissioner Brunetti’s Investigations by Donna Leonwhich has more than thirty volumes. Currently in development at 20th Television, the series will follow Detective Commissioner Guido Brunetti as he fights crime in Venice, Italy. According to the official synopsis of the series, “Unhappy detectives are all the same; a happy detective struggles to remain happy in his own way. In a declining Venice, far from the crowds of tourists, Detective Commissioner Brunetti must fight daily to protect his city and his family from the harsh realities of murder , corruption and of course the interference of his aristocratic in-laws.”

The series, which currently has no release date, was actually created by Ileen Maisel, long-time friend and mentor of Julian Fellowes. The producer, who died last February at the age of 68, will still be credited as executive producer alongside Julian Fellowes who will also be responsible for writing the series. The American author Donna Leon, who is at the origin of the detective novels, will also serve as executive producer. As for the actors, no names have been officially revealed.

While waiting for the release of this new series, Julian Fellowes is devoting himself to his two other projects: season 3 of The Gilded Age, currently being filmed, as well as the third part of Downton Abbey which already announces itself as “the best film” according to an actor in the series. Two years after the second opus, the production confirmed last spring the development of a new feature film based on the historical drama, which is scheduled for release on September 10, 2025 in French theaters.
